Anambra govt hands Catholic Mission N217M cheque for school upgrade


The State Government has presented a cheque for the sum of two hundred and seventeen million naira to the Catholic Church for the upgrade of the schools it handed over to the Mission.
Governor Willie Obiano presented the cheque at a ceremony held at Shanahan Hall, Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, Onitsha to mark the event.
The money is for the execution of projects under the Universal Basic Education, UBE 2015 Action Plan in the schools handed over to the Catholic Mission.
Presenting the cheque, Governor Obiano said the State Government's Partnership with the Church is already yielding results evident in the infrastructural turnaround in the Schools as well as the numerous laurels students from the state continue to win at both national and international levels.



 

Governor Obiano explained that the intervention to schools was according to the number of schools handed over to each mission, commending his predecessor, Chief Peter Obi for the initiative to hand over the schools to their rightful owners.                               

 According to him, his administration is sustaining the partnership in keeping with its continuity stance and in recognition of the key role the church plays in building a better future for the state.
In his welcome address, the Archbishop Metropolitan, Ecclesiastical Province of Onitsha, the Most Reverend Valerian Okeke thanked God for giving Anambra a leader like Governor who he noted, understands the importance of education and the need to invest in the future of Children, adding that the state is presently enjoying the dividends of his visionary leadership.                       

 

 Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Professor Kate Omenugha said the event marks a milestone in the state government's efforts to ensure that the learning needs of all are met and thanked the Catholic Church for its commitment to the partnership and the judicious use of the intervention funds.           

  In their separate remarks, the State Chairman, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Elder Chris Eluemuno and an APGA stalwart, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka said Governor Obiano has continued to blaze the trail in good governance adding that with the donations to the mission schools, they will be well equipped to effectively groomed students in the path of sound morality.             

  In a vote of thanks, the Auxilliary Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Reverend Jonas-Benson Okoye thanked the Governor for his consistency in pursuing the transformation of the state and assured that the funds will be put to proper use.
