The Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has made a case for a better treatment and appreciation of Nigerian teachers, saying that no forward-looking society should toy with the affairs of its teachers.

The Governor who spoke at the 59th Annual National Congress of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) described teachers as the pillars of society who deserve a special attention and consideration from the government and enlightened members of society.

Describing himself as a proud son of a teacher, Governor Obiano said Nigeria’s leadership "must build the Nigerian teacher to help us build a better society."

Narrating the efforts of his administration to motivate teachers in the state, Obiano said; "Indeed, we take our teachers seriously in Anambra State. Anambra teachers are beneficiaries of the 15% increase in salary that we gave to all civil servants in the state. However, beyond that, last year, we sent 23 vocational school teachers to an offshore training in Singapore to learn the global best practices in vocational education. We are very prompt in the payment of their salaries and allowances. We pay additional N3,000 to motivate teachers who teach English Language, Mathematics and the basic sciences while we pay 20% of the basic salary to teachers who accept a posting to some hard-to-reach locations."

The governor assured of his administration’s commitment to continue to inspire the teachers so that they would offer their best to Anambra children, saying, "we shall continue our efforts to reposition our teachers in the frame of reference of our people. Indeed, my administration will not relent in doing what we can to ensure that the Anambra teacher does not wait to be rewarded in heaven for his good work on earth."
